Scoil Mocheallóg was created in 2004 when Scoil Uí Eilí is Uí Ruairc, the Girls’ School and Scoil Peadar agus Pól, the Boys’ School amalgamated.

Scoil Uí Eilí is Uí Ruairc was established in 1929 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Paul.  The teaching role of the Sisters in the school ended when Sr. Teresa Murphy retired in January 2012.

Scoil Peadar is Pól was opened in 1966. For many years Scoil Peadar is Pól educated all the boys of the town. The final Principal, Seán O’Connor retired in 2004, facilitating the amalgamation.

Prior to 1966 the Boys’ School was situated on Orr Street.

Before 1929, all children attended school in Orr Street where the girls were on the first floor and the boys occupied the ground floor.

Following the official amalgamation of the two schools in 2004, Scóil Mocheallóg operated in two separate locations until April 2007.  All pupils moved into our new ‘state of the art’ building in April 2017.

Our new building consists of 16 classrooms, one of which is being used as an Aistear room and one of which is being used for our early intervention preschool. We also have 8 resource rooms, a PE Hall, a Library, our Sunflower ASD unit complete with its own playground and sensory room, a staff room, Principal’s office, Secretary’s office, 2 basketball courts, an Infant playground located on a roof, an internal garden, an outdoor classroom, a playing field, a front lawn and two concrete play areas. We have 323 pupils, 23 teachers including the Principal, 9 classroom assistants, a Secretary , a Caretaker and Cleaners.

Canon William Fitzmaurice retired as chairperson of the Board of Management in the Autumn of 2019. He had served in this role since 1995. On his retirement he sent this letter to the pupils, parents and staff of Scoli Mocheallóg.

On behalf of Scoil Mocheallog Board of Management, I want to formally announce the appointment of Ms Leonie Passmore as the new Principal of Scoil Mocheallóg.  She will take up her new position on January 6th 2020.  We congratulate her and wish her every success in her challenging role.  Also we convey our deepest gratitude to the retiring principal, Mr Michael O’Connor.  Since his appointment in January 2012, Michael has made an enormous contribution to Scoil Mocheallóg.  Firstly, he took charge of the amalgamated school which was on a dual site.  He has been proactively involved in the building process of the new school building until its opening in March 2017.  Also he has made a big contribution to the ongoing development and preservation of the old girl’s school so that it can benefit the social and educational needs of the community.  We wish him every success in his retirement.

The new Board of Management comes into operation on December 1st 2019 for four year’s duration.  The members of the new Board of Management are as follows.   James Connery, Fr. David Casey, Majella Nelligan, Thomas Murphy, Joanne Ryan, Edmund O’Reilly, Michael O’Connor and Leonie Passmore.   We wish them every success.

As outgoing chairperson since 1995 I wish to thank all previous members of the Boards of Management in Kilmallock for their generous investment of their time and commitment in a voluntary capacity.  Also, it has been a privilege to have worked with two previous principals; Sean O’Connor and Sr. Teresa Murphy.  Sean has been the mainstay of the boy’s school since its opening in 1962.  Sr. Teresa has been the last of a long line of religious sisters from    St. Paul’s congregation to be involved in education in Kilmallock.  This religious order set up the old girl’s school in 1927 and have been a major influence and presence ever since.  It is fitting to pay tribute to all of the retired teachers who have given long and invaluable service to primary education in Kilmallock.

It is now widely acknowledged that Kilmallock has one of the most modern schools in the country and great thanks is due to all who made this possible.  Also, we are fortunate to have a group of committed and dedicated teachers attached to the school.  Those teachers along with other supporting staff will continue to give the children of the overall Kilmallock community a first class education into the future.  We recognise too the role of the ancillary staff and all others in a supporting role.

Finally, a word of gratitude to parents, especially the different parents’ associations and all those involved in the fund raising campaigns of the past.  The schools in Kilmallock have always been indebted to the goodwill of the parish and community and I have no doubt that this will always be forthcoming in the future.

Canon William Fitzmaurice
